Nail Trimming

Many owners feel anxious about nail trimming, sometimes even more than their dogs. It’s completely understandable — overgrown nails can cause discomfort, while nails cut too short may bleed and create lasting fear or mistrust. Some dogs also find nail trimming unsettling due to the pressure on the nail, previous negative experiences, or the sound of the clippers.

Keeping nails at a healthy length is important for your dog’s comfort and mobility. Long nails can lead to:

  • Improper weight distribution on the paws
  • Changes in gait
  • Overextension of the toes
  • Ingrown dewclaws
  • A higher risk of injury during play

As nails grow longer, the pressure on the paw shifts backward when walking, placing extra strain on joints and tendons.

A simple guideline is: nails are too long if they touch the ground when your dog is standing. Ideally, you should be able to slide a piece of paper between the nail and the floor.

At Wheal Ki Groomers, we carry out dozens of nail trims every week. With over forty years of combined experience, your dog is always in safe, skilled hands.

We offer three nail-care options to suit your dog’s needs:

  • Nail clipping
  • Clip and grind – nails are clipped, then gently smoothed or fully ground for dogs who prefer this method
  • Clip, grind, and paw-pad tidy – a full nail service with excess hair trimmed from the pads

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Wheal Ki Dog Groomers!
